Every child deserves the chance to go back to learning.
In Gaza and Sudan, conflict has taken children out of the classroom — but UNICEF is helping bring them back.

When Learning Is Interrupted

For hundreds of thousands of children, school has become a distant memory. In Gaza, more than 90% of schools have been damaged or destroyed, leaving most school-age children without access to in-person education. In Sudan's Blue Nile State, ongoing conflict and school closures have disrupted learning in much the same way.

For these children, returning to the classroom means more than continuing their studies. It means regaining safety, routine, and hope for the future.

But Change is Happening

UNICEF and partners are expanding safe, child-friendly learning spaces in Gaza, where children can read, write, and rebuild basic skills through play and emotional support. These spaces are more than classrooms — they help children regain confidence after months of disrupted learning.

In Sudan's Blue Nile State, ongoing conflict has kept many schools closed for extended periods. UNICEF and partners are therefore focused on distributing learning supplies and working directly with schools to restart teaching, helping conflict-affected children reconnect with education.

UNICEF's response:

  • More than 100 multi-service learning spaces are now active in Gaza, reaching over 135,000 children

  • In Sudan's Blue Nile State, learning supplies have reached 500 students, including 120 displaced children

  • Education support now spans 418 schools, reaching more than 174,130 children
